Twelve years ago, Teresa Bernola's three daughters begged their mom for a pet, promising that they'd take care of it. "It was right after my divorce and I was trying to make things easier for my girls any way I could," says Teresa, 53. At the shelter, the kids chose a calico named Mona, who settled into life at the family's Burgettstown, PA, home.

Folks love to claim that their dogs or cats are smart, and perhaps they are. Pet hero stories warm our hearts, as we hear of dramatic rescues and human lives saved by valiant animals. Dogs have dragged children from rushing flood waters. Talking birds have called out for help. Cats have shown human helpers where to find those in distress.
My pet hero story is not exactly a near-death experience, but it might as well have been.
